Painting has been a passion of mine since childhood. My earliest works were paint by number kits given to me by my grandparents. I soon tired of painting other peoples designs and after a visit to an art show at the state fair, I gathered up my little paint pots and created my first original painting. Imagine my parents surprisewhen they discovered their 7 year old had painted her first nude. I followed up on my passion through college and became a high school art educator. I continue my college studies to a Masters degree and beyond, as well as studying under the tutelage of portrait artist Marvin Triguba. After retirement, my husband I moved from Ohio to Arizona, where I taught at a local college and currently conduct workshops in my studio. Although I have dabbled in various motifs my favorite subjects involve people and animals. Capturing the expression through posture and features tells a story and brings the work to life.
RODEO
No Parking Acrylic GALLERY WRAP 48"X 24"X 1.5"
The subjects I choose to portray are primarily encounters I have had; people and animals that I observe in random activities as well as intentional themes. I carry a camera with me constantly and record images that may become my next painting or sculpture. I often stray from local color and textures, while capturing the essence of my subject which is paramount through posture and personality. Portraying the spirit of life is a challenge I enjoy. In the series Rodeo, the connections of the women and men with their horses and fellow riders is strong. The viewer is drawn into the preparation, contemplation and the ride. Light and shadow, as well as the atmosphere of early morning, pushes the hues and values beyond local color. An orange foundation on the surface, creates consistency across the series, as the paint comes alive on the canvases.
